What is Modern?

Modern dance for kids and teens is an exciting and dynamic form of artistic expression that blends the technical foundations of ballet with the rhythmic elements of jazz and the fluidity of contemporary dance. This dance style offers a unique opportunity for young dancers to explore a wide range of movements and techniques, fostering both physical and emotional growth. Unlike more classical forms of dance, modern dance emphasizes creativity and individuality, encouraging young dancers to express their personal stories and emotions through innovative choreography.

Participating in modern dance classes helps kids and teens develop essential physical skills such as strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The diverse movements and sequences challenge their bodies in new ways, promoting overall fitness and health. Beyond the physical benefits, modern dance also nurtures important life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Dancers often work together in groups, learning to communicate and collaborate effectively to create cohesive performances.

Moreover, modern dance provides a safe and supportive environment where kids and teens can explore their artistic side. It allows them to experiment with movement and express their unique perspectives, building self-esteem and encouraging a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Whether performing on stage or simply enjoying the creative process in class, modern dance offers a fulfilling and enriching experience for young dancers of all skill levels.

Lizanne Robinson

I have been lucky enough to be dancing in some form my entire life. I started at the age of 3 with classical ballet, modern, and tap, and then acrobatics and gymnastics a few years later. In high school I started Latin and Ballroom dancing, completing my teachers training in 2008. I joined the UJ dance company in 2010 and was exposed to a multitude of styles from Cabaret, Urban Funk, Jazz, and Contemporary. I was definitely the worst at HipHop! I have a postgraduate degree in Anatomy and Biological Anthropology but prefer being in the dance studio all day.
I have been teaching for 17 years and absolutely love every minute of it.
