What is Contemporary?

Contemporary dance classes tailored for kids and teens provide a unique opportunity to explore a versatile and expressive dance style that merges the technical aspects of ballet, the energy of jazz, and the fluidity of modern dance. These classes are expertly designed to cater to various skill levels, from beginners who are just discovering their love for dance to more advanced students looking to refine their technique.

In a typical contemporary dance class, young dancers engage in a series of warm-up exercises that emphasize flexibility, strength, and body awareness. They then progress to learning choreography that challenges their creativity and encourages them to interpret music and movement in their own way. The focus on improvisation and self-expression helps students develop confidence and a deeper understanding of their artistic voice.

Beyond the physical benefits, contemporary dance classes foster a sense of community and collaboration. Students work together on group projects and performances, building strong bonds and learning the value of teamwork. With a supportive and inclusive environment, these classes not only nurture the technical skills of young dancers but also inspire them to embrace their individuality and passion for dance. Whether aspiring to pursue dance professionally or simply seeking a fun and fulfilling activity, kids and teens will find contemporary dance to be a rewarding and enriching experience.

Teacher Feature:

Gabreilla Smith - Contemporary, Physical & Technique Instructor

Gabriella Smith

I’ve  been dancing for 15 years with experience in Ballet, Contemporary and Burlesque. I have a certificate in Anatomy from the University of Michigan and a certificate in The Science of Exercise from the University of Colorado Boulder. I’m passionate about teaching physical/technique development as not only an auxiliary activity to help with dance, but to improve the overall health and wellness of the body and mind, using the time spent on these activities to appreciate what your body is capable of and grow beyond what you thought possible.

Lizanne Robinson - Acro, Burlesque, Contemporary, Modern Instructor

Lizanne Robinson

I have been lucky enough to be dancing in some form my entire life. I started at the age of 3 with classical ballet, modern, and tap, and then acrobatics and gymnastics a few years later. In high school I started Latin and Ballroom dancing, completing my teachers training in 2008. I joined the UJ dance company in 2010 and was exposed to a multitude of styles from Cabaret, Urban Funk, Jazz, and Contemporary. I was definitely the worst at HipHop! I have a postgraduate degree in Anatomy and Biological Anthropology but prefer being in the dance studio all day.
I have been teaching for 17 years and absolutely love every minute of it.
